Our SBB students are challenged to think outside the "box"

BloodCenter of Wisconsin's Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) Program is an integrated curriculum with an on-site emphasis.  The quality of our program, coupled with team work, cooperative learning, camaraderie with a little fun thrown in are all part of the student experience. The result? Our students have an exceptional rate of passing the SBB Board of Registry exam and very succesful careers upon graduating from our program. 

 

BloodCenter of Wisconsin's SBB Program provides its graduates with:

  • Expertise in all areas of transfusion medicine
  • Experience in respected diagnostic reference laboratories
  • Interaction with internationally recognized researchers, lectures, and educators
  • Research experience
  • Graduate credits 

There are 3 main components of the curriculum:

  • Clinical experience in various BloodCenter departments for hands-on training
  • SBB Series Lectures presented by BloodCenter staff and invited speakers, many recognized experts
  • Research practicum under the guidance of a mentor.

BloodCenter SBB students can complete the program in 1 to 2 years in this structured, yet self-paced format. SBB students spend approximately 15 - 20 hours per week on-site at BloodCenter of Wisconsin. This usually involves 10 - 16 hours in clinical rotations and 4 hours in lectures. This time varies depending on the student’s schedule. SBB students are also required to complete a guided research project as part of the program.

 

BloodCenter SBB students learn all aspects of:

  • Blood Collection, Donor Testing, Component Preparation
  • Hemapheresis, Donor Management, Blood Inventory Management
  • Immunohematology, Compatibility Testing, Transfusion Therapy
  • Hemostasis, Platelet and Neutrophil Immunology
  • HLA and Transplantation, Molecular Genetics
  • Quality systems, Administrative Procedures, and Educational Techniques
