Since 1977, BloodCenter of Wisconsin has worked with biomedical and biotech companies for the evaluation of new or modified medical devices related to laboratory instrumentation and the collection, manufacturing and transfusion of blood products. With successful execution and management of 510(k) clinical trials, our clinical research expertise has resulted in FDA regulatory clearance of numerous products.

BloodCenter of Wisconsin Clinical Trial Services offers these services to help evaluate medical devices and laboratory instrumentation:

Capabilities
Clinical Trial Services can provide these specialized testing related to collection, filtering, testing, and storage of blood products (whole blood, platelets, red cell, leukocytes, MNC and plasma)
 
Platelet studies
  • Cell counts, including residual white blood cells
  • Morphologic and functional platelet test including: hypotonic shock response (HSR), extent of shape change (ESC), morphology, swirling, aggregation, blood gases, lactic acid/ LDH, flow-cytometric measurement of P-Selectin (GMP-140)
  • Platelet Recovery and Survival using chromium-51 and indium-111
  
Red Cell Studies
  • Spun hematocrit and cell counts, including residual white blood cells
  • Morphologic and functional tests of red blood cells including: morphology score,  ATP, 2,3 - DPG, supernatant (including rejuvenation), hemoglobin, hemolysis, osmotic fragility, blood gases, glucose, sodium, potassium, lactate
  • Red blood cell recovery and survival using chromium-51 and technetium-99m.
  
Plasma Studies
  • Low range cell counting
  • Supernatant hemoglobin and hemolysis
  • Protein testing
  • Coagulation testing

Blood Products for Research CL Blood ProductsBloodCenter of Wisconsin offers a wide variety of products and services to advance your research in drug development, cellular and immune-therapies, and development of diagnostics devices and reagents.

 

Overview   
As a recognized leader in transfusion medicine we help our partners in all stages of research and development where blood samples or products are required.  BloodCenter of Wisconsin (BCW) strives to offer a broad range of services and top level customer care while providing you with standard and customized blood collections following stringent regulatory guidelines.

Services

BCW can provide an extensive variety of products, from remnant serum and plasma samples to specific blood components, to meet your particular needs. Peripheral blood or blood cells are collected from apparently healthy human volunteers by direct collection or automated apheresis instrumentation following an IRB approved protocol.  All collections are performed using commercially available apheresis devices and collection sets. Individuals who donate a blood product are screened for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV 1/2, HTLV-I/II, HIV-1/HCV/HBV Nucleic Acid, WNV Nucleic Acid, and Syphilis. 

Donors can be recruited from a pre-characterized registry according to:
• ABO type
• Age
• Sex
• Ethnicity
• HLA type
• Red Blood Cell genotype



Blood Products

Blood Tubes – collected in
• Acid Citrate Dextrose – (ACD yellow top)
• EDTA (K2 or K3, purple top)
• Heparin (Li or Na, green top)
• Sodium Citrate (light blue top)
• No anticoagulant – clot tube or serum separator (gold, red or orange top)
• Other tube types on request including customer supplied
• Shipped same day of collection

Blood Tube collections are not routinely tested for infectious disease markers, although donor pre-screening requests can be accommodated.


Whole Blood Units – approximately 450 - 550 mL
• Citrate Phosphate Dextrose CPD or CPDA1 anticoagulant
• Units with or without leukoreduction
• For other anticoagulants please inquire
• Shipped same day of collection

Peripheral Blood MNCs (LeukoPaks)

• Collected by apheresis in ACD-A anticoagulant
• Average 1 – 1.5 x 1010 cells per unit
• Shipped same day of collection


Platelets

• Single donor – collected with or without platelet additive solution
  (average 3 – 4 x 1011 cells/unit; higher doses available upon request).
• Whole blood-derived platelets – single or pooled from multiple donors
• Shipped same day of collection

Packed Red Blood Cells – from single or double units
 • Leukoreduction by manual or automated methods
 • Non-leukoreduced units available on request
 • Shipped same day of collection

Plasma
 • Whole blood-derived  or collected by apheresis
 • Apheresis derived shipped fresh same day of collection or frozen
 • Remnant samples


Serum

 • Custom collections
 • Remnant samples
